Pterygium
A Pterygium (pronounced tuh-RIJ-ee-um) is a benign, fleshy growth of the conjunctiva — the thin, transparent membrane covering the white part of the eye — that extends onto the cornea. It often appears as a triangular, wedge-shaped tissue growing from the inner (nasal) corner of the eye toward the pupil.
Causes and Risk Factors
Pterygium is commonly linked to:
- Excessive UV light exposure (especially sunlight)
- Dust, wind, and pollution
- Dry or arid climates
- Chronic eye irritation or dryness
It is therefore more frequent among people who spend long hours outdoors without eye protection.
Common Symptoms
- Redness and irritation
- A visible fleshy growth on the white part of the eye
- Burning, dryness, or foreign body sensation
- Blurred or distorted vision (if the growth advances onto the cornea)
- Cosmetic concern due to its appearance
When Is Surgery Needed?
Mild cases can be managed with lubricating or anti-inflammatory eye drops, but surgery is recommended when:
- The growth is progressing toward the pupil
- The patient experiences significant irritation or redness
- Vision becomes affected
- Cosmetic reasons are a concern
Advanced Pterygium Surgery at DSEH
At Dr. Daljit Singh Eye Hospital, pterygium removal is performed using microsurgical techniques under high magnification for precision and safety.
Our surgeons use the latest “Conjunctival Autograft” technique, where healthy tissue from your own eye is transplanted to cover the area after removal — this dramatically reduces recurrence rates and ensures smooth healing.
Key Features of Surgery at DSEH
- Performed under local anesthesia — completely painless
- Sutureless or minimal-stitch technique using tissue glue
- Quick recovery — most patients resume routine work in 1–2 days
- Excellent cosmetic results

Post-Operative Care
- Mild redness or irritation may persist for a few days
